Extreme Ice Melt in Greenland


Satellite observations of the U.S. space agency NASA revealed that the ice in Greenland melted mass. Melting occurs even in the coldest and highest in Greenland, Summit Station.

Three NASA satellites show that the ice covering Greenland melts begin July 8, 2012 and lasted for four days. Thick layer of ice that never melts persisted.

Melting ice is common in the summer, but the phenomenon is surprising because it occurs rapidly in a wide area coverage. NASA ice core records showing what happened in 1889 and occur every 150 years.

"There is a movement of warm air that passes through and melt the Greenland ice sheet," said Tom Wagner told the AP on Tuesday (07/24/2012).

Area of melting ice melting fast for four days, up from 40 percent to 97 percent ice cover. This broke the record.

Melting greatest thing that ever happened during the last three decades only covers 55 percent of the area.

Waigner which is es NASA researchers said they were not to know more about the cause melting, but it seems that the ice will freeze again.

Waleed Abdalati, also of NASA, said, "If we see the melting occurs in the region that we have never seen before in the long run, it makes you sit and think what is happening."

According Abdalati, what happens when this becomes a signal of what will happen the next few years.

At the same time with this melting, a giant iceberg in the Petermann Glacier, northern Greenland, collapsed. National Snow and Ice Data Center also stated that the Arctic ice-covered area decreases.

Until now, scientists do not yet know whether the melting is a rare phenomenon "regular" or the impact of climate change. However, undeniable that the decrease in the thickness of ice sheets in Greenland is the impact of climate change.

Thomas Mote, climatologists from the University of Georgia, said that the summer is high temperature in Greenland. This is because the high pressures that exist in the region led to the arrival of "hot air".
